Description
The Benelli M2 Field 20ga is a semi-automatic shotgun built for American hunters who demand reliable cycling in the field, whether you’re working flooded timber for ducks or walking a CRP field for pheasants. With a 28-inch barrel and Shadow Grass Blades camo, this model is designed to blend into marshy environments while delivering the consistent, recoil-reduced performance that Benelli’s inertia-driven system is known for. For the upland or waterfowl hunter who spends long days in variable weather, the M2 Field offers a lightweight, low-maintenance platform that puts more birds in the bag.
What This Product Is and Who It’s For
The Benelli M2 Field 20ga is a purpose-built semi-automatic shotgun for hunters who prioritize speed, reliability, and reduced felt recoil. It is not a tactical or home-defense shotgun—it is a field gun, optimized for waterfowl, upland birds, and small-game hunting. The 20-gauge chambering makes it an excellent choice for younger shooters, those with smaller frames, or anyone who prefers a lighter gun for all-day carry. It also appeals to experienced hunters who want a backup gun or a dedicated option for walking thick cover. This is not a competition or range toy; it is a tool for the working hunter.

Feature Deep-Dive
The Benelli M2 Field 20ga relies on the company’s proven Inertia-Driven system, which uses the gun’s recoil energy to cycle the action. Unlike gas-operated designs, this system has no gas ports, pistons, or O-rings to clean or replace. This means less fouling buildup and more consistent cycling across a wide range of shell lengths and power levels, from light target loads to heavy 3-inch magnums. For hunters who spend days in muddy blinds or dusty fields, the reduced maintenance requirement is a real advantage—you spend more time shooting and less time scrubbing.
The 28-inch barrel is paired with Benelli’s Crio-treated bore, which is cryogenically treated to relieve stress in the steel and provide a smoother, more uniform surface. This process is intended to improve patterning consistency and reduce shot deformation as pellets travel down the barrel. The Crio system also extends to the included choke tubes, which are similarly treated to maintain a consistent constriction. Hunters chasing fast-moving ducks or flushing pheasants will appreciate the tighter patterns and predictable shot placement this system delivers.
Weight is a significant factor in a field shotgun, and the M2 Field 20ga comes in at just under 6 pounds. This makes it one of the lighter semi-automatic options in its class, which reduces fatigue during long walks through marshes or upland terrain. The synthetic stock and forend are finished in Shadow Grass Blades camo, a pattern designed to break up the shotgun’s outline in grassy and marsh environments. The stock also features a shim system that allows the shooter to adjust drop and cast, providing a custom fit for different body types and shooting styles.
The shell carrier and bolt release are both oversized for easier manipulation with gloved hands, a detail that matters when temperatures drop and dexterity suffers. The magazine tube is equipped with a plug for migratory bird hunting, which can be easily removed for increased capacity when hunting upland game or small game. The cross-bolt safety is reversible, making the gun accessible to left-handed shooters without requiring a gunsmith. These are practical, field-tested features that reflect Benelli’s decades of experience building shotguns for real-world hunting conditions.
Recoil management is another strong point. The Inertia-Driven system absorbs a portion of the recoil energy to cycle the action, which reduces the felt kick compared to fixed-breech or pump-action shotguns. Combined with the relatively light weight of the 20-gauge platform, this makes the M2 Field comfortable to shoot for extended sessions. The comb and heel drop dimensions are designed to promote a natural cheek weld, helping shooters maintain a consistent sight picture when swinging on moving targets. This is a shotgun that rewards practice and familiarity.
The M2 Field’s receiver is machined from aluminum alloy, keeping weight down without sacrificing strength. The anodized finish resists corrosion and scratches, which is important for hunters who work in wet or abrasive environments. The barrel and magazine tube are also finished in the Shadow Grass Blades camo pattern, providing full coverage that helps the gun stay concealed when set down in cover. While not a waterproof gun, the M2 Field handles damp conditions well, and the synthetic stock will not swell or crack like wood can in high humidity.
Ideal Use Cases
Waterfowl Hunting: The Shadow Grass Blades camo and 28-inch barrel make this shotgun a natural for duck and goose hunting over decoys or in pass shooting scenarios. The 3-inch chamber handles steel shot loads, and the inertia system cycles reliably even in cold, wet conditions.
Upland Bird Hunting: At under 6 pounds, the M2 Field is easy to carry through heavy cover for pheasants, quail, or grouse. The 20-gauge chambering provides enough reach for shots out to 40 yards while keeping the gun light enough for quick mounting.
Small Game and Pest Control: For squirrels, rabbits, or coyotes, the M2 Field’s adjustable choke system allows you to tailor patterns for different ranges and shot sizes. The inertia action handles light target loads and heavy field loads without adjustment.
Youth and Smaller-Framed Shooters: The reduced weight and lower recoil of the 20-gauge make this an excellent option for introducing new hunters to semi-automatic shotguns. The shim system allows for a custom fit that can accommodate smaller builds.
Compatibility Notes
Ammunition: The M2 Field 20ga cycles 2¾-inch and 3-inch shells reliably. It works with light target loads (1-ounce, 1200 fps) as well as heavy steel or bismuth loads. Avoid using shells shorter than 2¾ inches, as they may not cycle the inertia system consistently. Lead, steel, and bismuth shot are all safe through the Crio-treated barrel.
Chokes: The gun ships with Crio IC, M, and F choke tubes. Aftermarket Crio-compatible chokes from Benelli or brands like Carlson’s and Patternmaster will fit. Standard Benelli Mobilchoke tubes are not compatible with the Crio system.
Accessories: Benelli offers a range of replacement stocks, forends, and recoil pads for the M2 platform. Aftermarket magazine tube extensions are available from Nordic Components and Taran Tactical, though they may require a longer spring and plug removal. The receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounts, but most hunters will rely on the factory front bead.
Holsters and Slings: This is not a handgun, so holster compatibility does not apply. For slings, use a standard 1-inch or 1¼-inch quick-detach sling with studs installed at the factory. Uncle Mike’s and Butler Creek offer compatible sling swivels.
FAQ
1. Do you ship this Benelli M2 Field to all U.S. states?
We ship to all states where the purchase of a shotgun is legal for the buyer. However, we do not ship to states or municipalities with magazine capacity restrictions or specific shotgun bans (e.g., certain features in some localities). You must be at least 18 years old to purchase a shotgun from a federally licensed firearms retailer. All shipments go to your chosen FFL dealer for transfer.
2. How does the FFL transfer process work?
After you place your order, we will contact you to confirm your chosen FFL dealer’s information. We ship the shotgun to that dealer via a licensed carrier. You will then visit the dealer, complete the ATF Form 4473, and pass the required background check (NICS) before taking possession. Transfer fees are set by the dealer and are not included in our price. We only ship to FFLs that have a valid, current license on file with us.
3. What ammunition is compatible with this shotgun?
The M2 Field 20ga is chambered for 2¾-inch and 3-inch shells. It cycles reliably with loads from 1 ounce to 1¼ ounces, including target loads, field loads, and steel or bismuth waterfowl loads. We recommend using shells with at least 1200 fps velocity for consistent cycling. Avoid using 2½-inch shells or subsonic loads, as they may not generate enough recoil to cycle the inertia system.
4. What warranty does this Benelli M2 Field come with?
Benelli USA provides a limited lifetime warranty to the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty covers repair or replacement of defective parts. It does not cover normal wear and tear, damage from improper use, or modifications. You must register your shotgun with Benelli USA within 30 days of purchase to activate the warranty. We recommend keeping your sales receipt as proof of purchase.
5. What is your return policy for firearms?
All firearms sales are final. We do not accept returns or exchanges on firearms once they leave our inventory. If your shotgun arrives with a manufacturer defect or is damaged in transit, we will work with you and Benelli USA to resolve the issue. You must inspect the firearm at your FFL dealer before accepting the transfer. If you refuse the transfer, the shotgun will be returned to us, and you will be subject to a restocking fee of 15% plus shipping costs. We do not accept returns for buyer’s remorse or incorrect selection.
